Remote-First MSP vs Local IT Provider vs In-House IT: How to Choose for an Overseas Office

By the Integrated Business Systems engineering team · Last updated 27 October 2026

When a company opens an office abroad, IT support usually comes from one of three places. None is right for everyone. This guide compares them honestly, including when we are not the best choice.

The three options

Remote-first managed service provider

one provider runs IT for all your offices remotely, with local field partners for physical work.

Local IT provider

a company in the new office's city supports that office, usually with its own on-site engineers.

In-house IT hire

you employ an IT person or team in the new office.

Support across time zones

Three common models: (1) head-office IT covers the new office in its own hours, which leaves the European morning unsupported; (2) a local provider covers local hours, but security and tools may differ from head office; (3) a provider that runs 24/7 operations and agrees covered hours per office. Ask any provider for its critical-incident response time outside business hours, in writing.

When each option makes sense

  • Choose a local IT provider if the office needs daily on-site support or support in the local language.
  • Choose an in-house hire if the office is large enough to keep one person busy full time and you can cover their holidays.
  • Choose a remote-first MSP if you have offices in several countries, want one security standard, and most support can be done remotely.

Questions to ask any provider

  • What is your response time for a critical incident at 3am local time?
  • Who does on-site work, and how is it booked?
  • Will our offices share one set of security policies?
  • How often do you test restoring our backups?
  • What will we receive every month?

Frequently asked questions

It can be, because on-site work goes through a field partner rather than a resident engineer. That's why it suits offices where most issues can be fixed remotely.
