Setting Up IT for a New Office in Spain

By the Integrated Business Systems engineering team · Last updated 27 October 2026

Spain, and Barcelona and Madrid in particular, attracts international tech, professional services and logistics companies. Here is what to plan on the IT side before your Spanish office opens.

Before you open

Spanish entities are usually set up with local accounting and legal advisers, but IT decisions are often left until the first hire arrives. Decide early whether Spanish staff join your existing Microsoft 365 tenant, how laptops will be bought and enrolled in Spain, and who will install the office network.

The general checklist applies in full; see our new European office checklist.

Data protection and security rules in Spain

Spain applies the GDPR together with its own data protection law, the LOPDGDD (Organic Law 3/2018), supervised by the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD). Organisations that supply the Spanish public sector may also be asked to meet the Esquema Nacional de Seguridad (ENS), Spain's national security framework. NIS2 extends cybersecurity duties to more organisations across the EU, and Spain is bringing it into national law.

Workplace and employee considerations

The LOPDGDD includes specific workplace rights, including privacy in the use of digital devices provided by the employer and a right to digital disconnection outside working hours. If you plan to monitor devices or email, agree the policy with your legal advisers and inform staff before you switch tools on.

Language and support

Many local IT providers work mainly in Spanish (and in Catalonia, Catalan). If your Spanish team works in English, confirm the support language before choosing a provider.

Who should support the office

A local Spanish provider suits offices that need daily on-site help in Spanish. A provider covering all your offices suits companies that want one security standard across countries. Our Barcelona page explains how we support Spanish offices.
