Setting Up IT for a New Office in the UK

By the Integrated Business Systems engineering team · Last updated 27 October 2026

For many US companies the UK is the first overseas office. Shared language makes it feel simple, but data protection, customer security expectations and the time difference still need planning.

Before you open

Plan the UK office as part of your existing environment rather than a separate island: same tenant, same device build, same security policies. Line up who will install the network and how hardware will be bought and delivered in the UK.

Day-one IT checklist

Follow our general new European office checklist.

Data protection and security rules in the UK

Since leaving the EU, the UK has its own version of the GDPR (the UK GDPR), alongside the Data Protection Act 2018, enforced by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). The UK has its own network and information systems regulations rather than NIS2, and the government has proposed strengthening them. Many UK customers and public-sector buyers ask suppliers for Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus, the government-backed security baseline.

Workplace and employee considerations

The ICO publishes guidance on monitoring workers. Be transparent with staff about any device, email or activity monitoring, and limit it to what you can justify.

Language and support

Language isn't the issue in the UK; hours are. London is five hours ahead of New York, so support that runs only in US business hours leaves the UK morning uncovered.

Who should support the office

A London IT company suits offices that need frequent on-site work. A provider that covers both your US and UK offices avoids two sets of tools and standards. See how we support London offices.

Frequently asked questions

The UK applies the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. If the UK office also serves people in the EU, the EU GDPR can apply to that activity too.

Where we deliver this

Managed IT in London

We run IT for the London offices of US and international companies: helpdesk, Microsoft 365 security, office networks and backups, under the same SLA as your other offices. Monitoring never switches off, and a vetted London field partner takes care of anything physical.
